A material that changes honestly tells you where it is held, how it moves, and which parts do the work. These traces are not defects when the construction remains sound; they are evidence of use.

We favor finishes that can tolerate this evidence without becoming visually chaotic. Matte metals, dense natural fibers, repairable leather, and mineral surfaces tend to reward care instead of demanding caution.

Choose repair over replacement

Look for fasteners that can be reached, parts that can be cleaned, and construction that does not hide every joint behind glue. Repairability is a design quality, even when a repair is never needed.
